On behalf of the Lung Cancer Awareness Group, I would like to extend a huge thank you to the TCRC. The support, guidance and encouragement from the TCRC, as well as volunteers and members that participated, helped make possible another successful and safe "Lung Run".
The Lung Cancer Awareness Group is a local, non-profit organization founded by several oncology nurses. The goal of the LCA Group is to encourage awareness in our community, especially to youth, about lung cancer prevention, risks, screening, research , treatment advances and survivorship. The "Lung Run" is our major tool to accomplish this goal.
Over 530 runners and walkers, and 20 teams participated in the 5K on a beautiful, sunny Sunday. This year we also had our 1st "Kid's Fun Run", with 24 happy runners, each receiving medals and goodie bags after being greeted at the finish line by Max, t he Binghamton Senators mascot, Star Wars characters, E.T., Goofy and soap bubbles in the air.
We would like to acknowledge those associated with the TCRC, who have contributed time, talents and wisdom to the "Lung Run": Grace Tabeek, George Joseph, Lorri Joseph, Ann Noble, Tony Mazza, Tom Carter and TCRC Board, Brendan Flynn, Vince Kelley, Geor ge Groome, Dan Dougherty, Mike Zwick, Suzanne Myette, Annette Acuff - who also has her Binghamton University Cross Country teams volunteer for their community service at the "Lung Run" (every year!), Helmuth Betz, Max and John Straneva, and Tom Morrissey. I hope I have not missed anyone.... without volunteers there would not be a "Lung Run".
Personally, I am proud to be a member of the TCRC and I am very appreciative for all the opportunities it has afforded me as a runner and community member. Our community is very fortunate to have its support and involvement in many events that benefit many organizations and worthwhile causes.
